Welcome to my poker blog

pablo Aug 13, 2024

Hi everyone,

My name is Pablo. I'm excited to start this blog and share my poker journey with all of you.

I'm a 26-year-old professional poker player from Spain. I first got into poker in early 2017. What began as casual sit-and-go sessions with friends quickly grew into a full-blown passion. By the end of that year, I found myself diving into 2NL with a €100 bankroll, setting the stage for an exciting adventure.

The ups and downs of poker have been a wild ride, but they've made me the player I am today. A major turning point came in April 2020 when I joined BluffTheSpot while playing mostly NL50. With guidance from some of the best coaches, I sharpened my poker strategy both on and off the tables and soon was able to turn 100% full-time pro and move up in stakes.
These days, I'm comfortably playing midstakes for the last years and even taking shots at 2000NL when the opportunity arises.

I have been doing some 1on1 coaching over the last years since I joined the BTS coaching team at the end of 2021. Last month I also started hosting some of the webinars for the BTS Academy. The feedback of the students was overall very positive and I enjoyed being able to share my thought process with multiple people. This motivated me to push a long-term "boundary" of mine by never doing any social media content, as I was a bit uncomfortable with the thought of talking to the camera. But you don't grow, when you limit yourself with stupid boundaries and because of that you will see me streaming on Twitch. Starting next month I will be streaming twice a week (Tuesday and Thursday 5pm CET) on the BTS channel.

As this is my first blog post I want to write a little bit about often-forgotten struggles that I experienced over the years, how I solved those and how I try to approach things nowadays.

First, at the beginning of my career, I was neglecting my physical and mental health and it took me too long to realize how important lifestyle was for better performance and living happily. I slowly started adding habits around having a good rest, a healthy diet and regular exercise including gym workouts, calisthenics, and paddle tennis. These changes greatly improved my mood off the tables and my performance on the tables. Meditation and learning to manage my emotions and problems more effectively has also been crucial. For the same reason, I recovered many hobbies that I had forgotten and picked up new ones. Apart from sports, I enjoy reading and playing the guitar. These activities help me relax and disconnect.

Second, I was focusing too much on poker while overlooking my relationships. Through some hard lessons, I learned the importance of paying more attention to and taking better care of them. Strong, healthy relationships provide emotional support and stability, which are essential for maintaining focus and resilience in the high-pressure job of poker.

Third, I've definitely made my fair share of financial blunders along the way. Despite having a savings-oriented mindset, I used to put too much of my assets into investments, often leaving myself with too little cash for playing. This imbalance caused some stress and affected my game. I've since realized the importance of better money management and have started to strike a healthier balance between my investments and the cash I need for my playing needs and my financial goals, which has made a big difference in my overall performance and peace of mind.

Fourth, in terms of strategy, I allowed more space for creativity in my game. Instead of sticking to too structured strategies, I became more innovative while playing, which has significantly improved my winrate. Solvers are a great way to gain good fundamentals if study right and after hundreds of hours, but most of the EV is generated by optimizing the right exploits. There is a huge difference in EV between exploiting an opponent "okeish" and exploiting him perfectly.

In September, my girlfriend and I are moving into a new place, and I'm excited to set up a dedicated office. This space will help me push my coaching and playing skills to new heights and aim for the best performance in my poker career. I am looking to continue all the good habits that I have built while also striving to keep growing in my journey. Hopefully, the new home will be the best possible place to do it from.

Thanks for joining me on this journey. Stay tuned for more updates!

Cheers, Pablo
